In less than 4 days, new Hurricanes GM Andre Deblois has already stamped his name in the NHLSL history books by completing the league’s first ever coach-for-coach trade with his counterpart in Columbus.
Following up on his statement to the league that he intended to trade Scotty Bowman, GM Deblois sent the legendary coach to Columbus in exchange for their head coach, Phil Housley, San Jose’s 2019 2nd round pick and young pro Rudolfs Balcers.
“We are pleased add a player like Balcers to our ever growing crop of young, future NHLers and the 2nd round pick will allow us to continue to focus on our draft and development plan moving forward” stated Deblois, who would go on to point out that since Housley is on a one-year deal, the deal also allows him the opportunity to hire his own coach in the offseason.
“We wish nothing but the best for Scotty Bowman in Columbus and want to thank him for his commitment to the team while he with the team,” added Deblois.
Prior to making this deal, GM Deblois completed a minor trade with the Florida Panthers, acquiring 1.25 million in cap space this season (needed to completed the trade with Columbus) in exchange for 1.25 million in cap space for next season.
